The Netherlands is a very multi divers country. The biggest misunderstanding that tourists have is that Amsterdam represents the whole Netherlands and it definitely doesn’t. Sure, Amsterdam is a great city where you can spend the full two weeks of your vacation, but the country offers so much more. It is very small country and therefore it is so easy to just rent a car and see as much as possible. While touring, you’ll develop a better image of the Dutchies en there culture.
If you decide to tour through the country you need to visit this place! The Kinderdijk is part of a village in the South of the province Holland. It is especially know for the mills. These mills are typically Dutch and here is just the best spot to see them. Furthermore, it is easy to get there with the car and there is a nice walk route or bike route near the parking lot, you can pass this routes for free. In addition, there is also the possibility to book a boot trip. The tickets for this trip can be purchased at the visitors center with no need for reservation. You can get in or get out of the boot whenever you want and are therefore not tied to the boot service.
This place is called the Venice of the Netherlands and I see why. It is a small water village and there are almost no roads here. Giethoorn lies in the province Overijssel and it is not near Amsterdam. This is why most tourists don’t visit this little secret place, but I would definitely recommend it!
Volendam is known as a little fisherman’s village and is located in the north of the province Holland. The village is kind of an open air museum, where the harbor forms the center of Volendam. Many Dutch people say: ‘you need to walk the Dijk of Volendam at least once in your life’ and that’s definitely true. One of the great things you can do in this village is to take a picture in the traditional costume that Dutch people wore back in the day. This is a cute photo you can show you friends and family when you get back. Another thing you must do when you are in a fisherman’s village, is eat some eel. On every corner of Volendam as well as Marken (another fisherman village) are small fish shops where you can buy some fish and chips and believe me, it’s delicious!
Over all, the country has a lot to offer and I would like to advise all of you to explore this small country as a whole instead of only visiting Amsterdam.
